formaldehyde ozone from ionizers and ozone generators

Formaldehyde Increases through Exposure to Ozone from Ionizers and Ozone Generators

The above is the title of an article that I came across while searching for MERV related information – the article was written by Jim Rosenthal.

Very interesting I believe and very informative, particularly to those in the air filtration business.

Quoting briefly (as you can read the rest of the article from the publishing website – link: the rest of the meat and potatoes you can find and read on the URL / link above.

Formaldehyde (HCHO) is a common substance in both indoor and outdoor environments. It is used in a wide range of products including wall board, glues, some carpets, fragrance products and insulation. It is also found in cigarette and cigar smoke and is a byproduct of hydrocarbon combustion. The National Toxicology Program (NTP) carcinogenic classification is that it is: “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.” Other health effects include eye, nose and skin irritation; exacerbation of asthma symptoms (characterized by coughing, difficulty breathing, bronchial spasm and pulmonary edema); lung damage; membranous nephropathy and liver toxicity. (Source: U.S. Department of Labor —

Formaldehyde exposure limits have been set by various governmental bodies. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has set a ceiling of 100 ppb for a 15 minute exposure.

molds, mold removal, mold remediation

Mold Remediation

Mold is a “growing” concern.  Mold spores can enter your house through windows, doors, heating, air conditioning and ventilation systems.  Molds, common and toxic can have varying physical effects including nasal stuffiness, eye irritation or wheezing to fever and shortness of breath.

Mold spores grow when they drop on places where there is excessive moisture, such as leakage in roofs, pipes, walls, planted pots or where there has been flooding. Paints, wallpaper, insulation materials, drywall, carpet, upholstery can support mold growth if there is a moisture problem.

Recommendations in getting rid of mold:
  • Keep humidity level in house below 45%.
  • Use air conditioner or a dehumidifier during humid months.
  • Be sure home has adequate ventilation, including exhaust fans in kitchen and bathrooms.
  • Use mold inhibitors which can be added to paints.
  • Clean bathroom with mold killing products.
  • Thoroughly inspect water damaged carpets.

It is possible to remove small amounts of mold by a thorough cleaning with bleach and water.  If mold returns, you may have an undetected moisture problem.

Since molds are considered a hazardous substance, it is a good idea to contact a Mold Remediation company staffed with Hazardous Material certified personnel that are recommended for this type of abatement.

hepa filtration

What is a HEPA filter? Quoting from our website at

HEPA filters, by definition, remove at least 99.97% of airborne particles 0.3 micrometers (µm) in diameter. Some manufacturers use HEPA material in their filters and claim that these are HEPA filters. Quatro Air certifies our filters as HEPA which means that they go through a vigorous testing procedure and meet medical standards for filtration.

HEPA filters are composed of a mat of randomly arranged fibres. The fibres are typically composed of fiberglass and possess diameters between 0.5 and 2.0 micron. Key factors affecting function are fibre diameter, filter thickness, and face velocity. The air space between HEPA filter fibres is much greater than 0.3 μm. The common assumption that a HEPA filter acts like a sieve where particles smaller than the largest opening can pass through is incorrect. Unlike membrane filters, where particles as wide as the largest opening or distance between fibres cannot pass in between them at all, HEPA filters are designed to target much smaller pollutants and particles. These particles are trapped (they stick to a fibre) through a combination of the following three mechanisms:

  1. Interception, where particles following a line of flow in the air stream come within one radius of a fibre and adhere to it.
  2. Impaction, where larger particles are unable to avoid fibres by following the curving contours of the air stream and are forced to embed in one of them directly; this effect increases with diminishing fibre separation and higher air flow velocity.
  3. Diffusion, an enhancing mechanism is a result of the collision with gas molecules by the smallest particles, especially those below 0.1 µm in diameter, which are thereby impeded and delayed in their path through the filter; this behaviour is similar to Brownian motion and raises the probability that a particle will be stopped by either of the two mechanisms above; it becomes dominant at lower air flow velocities

Diffusion predominates below the 0.1 μm diameter particle size. Impaction and interception predominate above 0.4 μm. In between, near the 0.3 μm MPPS, diffusion and interception predominate.

The filter resistance to flow is known as its pressure drop

odor air filtration with activated carbon filter

Activated Carbon Charcoal Air Filtration, Air Cleaner, Purifier, Scrubber Adsorbent for Chemical Fumes Gases Odor Chemical Fragrance Sensitivity

  • What it does and how it works.
Activated carbon is carbon that has been treated with oxygen to open up millions of tiny pores between the carbon atoms. There are so many of these that one pound has a surface area of 60 to 150 acres
  • The technology used in military gas masks.
Activated carbon is the substance that keeps military personnel safe from poisonous gasses. It is also used for water filtration.
  • Adsorption (Adsorb)
Adsorption is the process where certain chemicals are attracted to activated carbon and then bond to it. The millions of pores provide enormous surface area to trap these chemicals. Indeed, activated carbon / charcoal air filtration is a recommended adsorbent for chemical fumes ,gases, and odors.
  • The bigger the filter, the more activated carbon, the more chemicals it adsorbs and the longer it keeps on working.
Acts like a sponge. When it is full it can adsorb no more. The more carbon you have the more you can adsorb before changing the filter. Most off the shelf air cleaners, air purifiers, have only a few token ounces sprayed on a mesh. It’s not enough to have any useful long term effect.
  • Impregnated activated carbon
Catalysts can be added to enable it to attract non-carbon based chemicals. These special blends of activated charcoal are available if needed. Our air quality experts will recommend the right solution to any air contamination problem you encounter.

Blue Laser Gel – No Bypass

Seal  guarantees NO BYPASS

Quatro Air has been the OEM supplier of choice for numerous manufacturers of laser engravers and cutters. Working closely with the manufacturers has allowed us to constantly improve our products and custom design the next generation of air filtration for the laser cutting, marking and engraving industry. We have been supplying units to the industry for the past eight years and are now on our fourth generation of product with innovations such as our zero bypass Laser Blue Gel. Manufacturers and customers have done extensive testing when comparing our units to our competitors and time and time again we hear that our units are more powerful and quieter. We are confident that no other manufacturer of air purification systems can provide such industry proven technology that can compete with Quatro Air.

Effective fume extraction is critical to laser systems due to the possibility of toxic, carcinogenic corrosive or extremely odorous contaminants that can be generated.  All of our systems feature multi-stage filtration incorporating a 2” Pre-filter section, 2” Certified HEPA filter and activated carbon modules. We offer systems for light-medium duty tabletop systems favored by hobbyists everywhere as well as mid-heavy duty cycle units for larger tables and/or significant particle accumulation. New this year is our SPH-400 pre-filter section which will turn our popular SPH-400 system into a true heavy duty dust collector.

We are proud to introduce our new breakthrough technology. We call it the LASER BLUE GEL. This sleek blue design is nothing like the regular gasket you may find in other filtration units on the market. Due to it’s elasticity, it allows zero bypass to any fumes, odors and VOCs. It’s NON toxic and NON porous as well.
